Do married couples save money on car insurance? The answer to that question is usually a ‘yes’ in all 50 states. The average married couple saves $131 a year just by being on the same plan together. So should you stay together as a couple for the car insurance discount? Probably not, but that’s not our realm of expertise. Pricing varies by state so enter your zip code below to find out what kind of discount on car insurance you can expect as a married couple:
Which car insurance companies offer a marriage discount?
While almost all car insurance companies we have data for offer a marriage discount, it may not be called a "marriage discount" by the provider. Some providers stick to language such as "number of licensed drivers on the account" to avoid the messy business of trying to verify marriages in 50 states. Car insurance providers simply want more customers and adding them to existing accounts is an efficiency win for them, on the whole. So you’re not exactly getting a marriage discount for being married, rather you’re generating a discount by adding more members to your plan.
Here’s a list of car insurance providers that we know offer a discount for married couples:
- Geico
- State Farm
- Nationwide
- AllState
- Progressive
- Almost all other, smaller insurers offer discounts
Do auto insurance rates change depending on your gender or marriage status?
Yes. On the whole, you might think female drivers are paying a bit less for car insurance because men get into more wrecks and get more speeding tickets than women, but the most important distinction is that men drive 6,000 more miles per year on average. Car insurance companies take gender into account because they analyze all available data to determine your rate. That being said, rates for men versus women are somewhat inconsistent and sometimes even slightly favor men, inexplicably. Like most institutions as old as insurance, there are systemic issues with gender bias that may play a role here and we would be remiss to not mention those too.
For married couples of any gender, insurance companies are happy to get two customers on to one account and extend some of their savings to the couple as a loyalty incentive.
So how much does the average married person save on car insurance?
The average married couple in the US saves about $131 on car insurance but that number can vary widely by the state you live in. For example in Rhode Island you’ll each pay about $288 per month whereas in Maine you’ll only have to pay $100 each. This variance doesn’t have much to do with your marriage status, as that only affects the average car insurance rate about 7%, but more to do with your state’s regulations around car insurance.
